What is function?

A function is a preset formula in Excel. Like formulas, functions begin with the equal sign ( = ) followed by the function’s name and its arguments. The function name tells Excel what calculation to perform. The arguments are contained inside round brackets.

When we input equal (=) sing in excel and press any letter, total number of functions will be displayed with a popup drop down. We can select our required function by navigating arrow key or by click. A little description will be also found the right side of the selected function just looks like below:

And when we select a function, the function syntax is also popup just below the function. So, I suggest you that never try to keep in mind about syntax or arguments. Only remember why we use this function.

In the above function you see a ( ) bracket which hold its only one argument. Some function have more than one arguments. There are two types of arguments, mandatory and optional. Optional argument is rounded by [ ]. For an example, see the below function:
